STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE (SOP) FOR PATCHING AND PREHEATING

To achieve the best possible performance, it is advised to adhere to the following SOP for patching the ramming mass. This SOP is provided as a best-practice guideline.

 1.Preheating the Ramming Mass:

Before any application, the required quantity of fresh silica ramming mass must be uniformly preheated to an optimal temperature (typically between 80°C to 100°C) to completely eliminate any surface or residual moisture.

2. Detailed Patching Procedure:

1. Inspection and Chipping:  Chip away all slag, glazed refractory, and sintered layers using appropriate tools until the loose, unsintered granular layer (dry zone) is exposed. A strong bond can only be formed between the fresh mass and the unsintered/semi-sintered zone.

2. Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the chipped area using high-pressure compressed air to remove all dust, debris, and loose particles. Ensure the area is completely clean and dry.

3. Application: Apply the preheated ramming mass (as per step 1) directly into the chipped cavity.

4. Compaction (Ramming): Ram the mass thoroughly using a suitable pneumatic ramming tool. Compaction must be performed after every few inches of material lined to ensure proper cementing and packing of the material with the furnace lining. Compaction must be dense and uniform to ensure proper interlocking between the furnace surface and the newly applied mass. Pay special attention to the edges to avoid joints or gaps.

5. Leveling and Profiling: Level the patched area and scrape off any excess material to match the original profile and contour of the furnace lining.

6. Controlled Sintering: The patched area must be sintered properly. Avoid sudden thermal shocks. Introduce the charge and follow a controlled, gradual heating cycle to allow the patched mass to form a strong ceramic bond without spalling.
